As part of Boulder’s iconic “Month of Modern,” M.O.M. hosted a design competition to re-envision and restore the Elks Lodge in north Boulder—bringing it back as a vibrant, future-ready hub for the community.
Our entry was awarded “Most Feasible Design.” The concept centered on a practical, mission-aligned funding strategy: support a comprehensive renovation by selling a portion of the property to create much-needed “Missing Middle” housing—helping the Elks reinvest in their home while contributing to Boulder’s housing needs.
We envisioned a net-zero energy, all-electric residential community with parking placed underground, freeing the site for family-friendly landscaped courtyards between clusters of townhomes. Alongside the new housing, we proposed a dramatic enhancement of the existing Elks Club—fully renovating the building inside and out and adding amenities designed to increase year-round use and community value, including pickleball courts, a playground, a splashpad, and revitalized landscaping and parking.
To bring the vision to life with clarity and speed, we also used artificial intelligence to develop conceptual visuals—helping stakeholders quickly understand the atmosphere, massing, and potential of the site while keeping the design grounded in real-world feasibility.
Finally, our proposal outlined a clear path for a comprehensive sustainability upgrade to make the Elks Lodge net-zero energy. While we take pride in inspiring design, we take just as much care to ensure every concept is buildable, practical, and aligned with the client’s goals—solving for community impact, long-term performance, and intelligent execution.
